The US is cutting costs by buying Chinese parts for its fighter jets, a 70-year-old man wakes up hours after being declared dead, and you know times are tough when a TV exec is caught breaking into a home.

TV official caught breaking in

The police in Northwest China's Shaanxi province caught a thief who turned out to be the deputy head of a TV station owned by a State-owned enterprise.

The suspect, surnamed He, was caught breaking into a couple's home in Chenggu county about 1:30 am on Monday morning. He offered 10,000 yuan ($1,652) to the couple if they let him go, but was refused, China Business News reported.

Police discovered that he was the deputy chief of the TV station affiliated with AVIC Shaanxi Aircraft Industry Group Co.

Back from the dead

A 70-year-old man who was confirmed dead at a hospital in East China's Anhui province woke up three hours after he was taken from the hospital.

Mei Meifeng, the man's daughter, said her father drank some pesticide after quarreling with his wife on Jan 1, and the hospital confirmed his death after 10 minutes of rescue efforts, China National News reported.

However, after he was brought home, the man suddenly woke up and said, "I want to pee," which shocked his daughter. Family members accused the hospital of making a mistake, the report said.

New face for CCTV gala

China Central Television on Wednesday announced the five anchors of its Spring Festival (New Year's Day on the Chinese lunar calendar) gala, including Zhang Guoli, a renowned actor and director who is hosting for the first time.

US fighter jets get Chinese parts

To cut costs, two American companies have been allowed by the US government to purchase Chinese-made components for their powerful F-35 fighter jets.

By buying magnetic components overseas, the US companies could save at least $10.8 million and 25,000 work hours, which would delay the marine force's plan to equip F-35B fighter jets by 2015, the World News Journal, a newspaper run by China Radio International, reported.

Smuggling fine

A man was fined 100,000 yuan for smuggling gold at Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court on Tuesday.

The man, surnamed Chen, was caught on July 27 last year at the airport while trying to take 2.9 kg of gold to Taiwan without declaring it with customs.
