Hangzhou---a city of history

What is the aim of travel? Some people say that they travel to escape, not from a country but from a memory. I want to say the best travel is going to an unfamiliar city and finding something that touches me. Hangzhou is exactly such a city that’s worth spending time there. Its history, water, peace and many other unique things all deserve our paying a visit.

Hangzhou---a city of history

Zhuang culture displayed in Hangzhou

Hangzhou has a long history, with the first people establishing a civilization over 4,700 years ago. Hangzhou is one of the seven ancient capitals of China. It was the capital of the Wuyue Kingdom from 907 to 978 during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms periods. After about 60 years in 1132, Hangzhou was chosen as the new capital of the Southern Song dynasty.

What’s more, two of the most famous Chinese poets, Bai Juyi and Su Shi, were appointed governors of Hangzhou. They used their leisure time to enjoy the beauty of Hangzhou, leaving many famous poems for their descendants. Through construction, West Lake became a beautiful landmark. Walking in the city and imaging our ancestors once walked the same paths impresses me a lot ,especially on a rainy afternoon.

To enjoy its history, I chose Longmen Old Town, which is said to be the hometown of Sun Quan, a Chinese emperor. There are extremely rare and well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the town. What an unforgettable experience to feel the unique folk customs of Jiangnan, taste the strong sun culture, which has developed over thousands of years, and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of Longmen mountain.
