Hulujie, or Gourd Street was the main street of an ancient township located on a steep cliff over Richui River in southwest China's Guizhou province. Stretching for some 1500 meters, this street is where the local life unfolded.
Bingan ancient town has a history spanning more than one thousand years, but the place is known more for its geographical features than its scholarly importance. Not only does the township stand on a cliff overlooking the torrents of Chishui River, it also forms part of the Danxia landform, which was included among the list of World Natural Heritage sites last year.
Gourd Street is lined with time-battered wooden houses, among which small shops and family restaurants are dotted. Many old facilities, such as the once prosperous river dock and the old entrance gate to the town, were well protected for their cultural and tourism value.
The street is the venue where locals hold product fairs and holiday celebrations.
