Fake IDs nullified

Police nationwide have in the first half of the year found 271,000 fake or duplicate ID records, all of which have been nullified, the Ministry of Public Security said on Saturday. A total of 149 cases of counterfeiting and selling fake ID cards or household registration documents, known as hukou, have been solved. And 46 members of the police system have been punished for involvement, the ministry said in a statement. Cases of officials and Party members owning two or more IDs or hukou should be reported to local CPC disciplinary and organization authorities, it said. Hukou are linked to citizens' ID cards and records. Last year, China identified and nullified 790,000 fake IDs.

Rollover accident kills 6

A passenger coach rolled over on Saturday along the Hangzhou-Huizhou highway in Zhejiang province, killing six and injuring more than 30 people, according to local traffic police. The coach with an Anhui license plate turned on its side at 12:40 pm when proceeding down a ramp for Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, from Anhui province, according to sources with the Hangzhou highway traffic police. The injured have been sent to nearby hospitals for treatment. The cause of the accident is being investigated, police said.

Exam fraudsters arrested

Police on Friday apprehended an agent who allegedly hired students to take China's college entrance exam for others. Zhang Xuanli was arrested in Huangshi, Hubei province, local police said. Zhang and another agent, Wang Binbin, who is also in custody, allegedly hired 11 college students to replace test-takers in Henan province's Qixian and Tongxu counties for the National College Entrance Examination, known as the gaokao, on June 6 and 7. The students who used substitutes had their exam results nullified and were barred from taking the exams for three years. Ten parents who paid for the scams were removed from government posts or demoted. Thirteen government workers and teachers were sacked or demoted for their roles. The investigation also punished five education officials in Henan. The substitutes may also face severe punishment.

Wuhan

Passenger train car derails

One coach of a passenger train derailed between Hubei province's Changyang and Yichang cities on Saturday morning, but no casualties have been reported, local railway authorities said. All passengers have been evacuated, authorities said. One compartment of the K504 train, en route from Sichuan's provincial capital Chengdu to Hunan province's Changsha, ran off the line at about 7:10 am. Railway authorities launched an emergency response. The accident's cause is under investigation.

Government invests in Disney Land

The Finance Committee of Hong Kong's Legislative Council on Friday approved a Hong Kong government request to increase its share in Hong Kong Disneyland. A total of HK$1.7 billion ($219 million) will be used to build a new hotel at the park on Lantau. Thirty-nine lawmakers supported the proposal, while eight voted against it. The funding request is the first of 44 items on the agenda of the Finance Committee, which faces a backlog because of filibusters.
