Sea Coast Guard rescues 14 fishermen

The China Coast Guard has rescued 14 fishermen who were reported missing in the South China Sea on Thursday, the CCG headquarters said on Saturday. Contact with the fishing boat Qiongyangpu 13073, with its crew of 14, was lost on Thursday morning while it was on its way from the Nansha Islands to the Xisha Islands.

National wrestling meet underway

The four-day 2014 Chinese National Wrestling Championships kicked off Saturday in Hohhot, capital of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region. A total of 394 competitors on 41 teams from Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Hebei and the Xinjiang Uygur and Inner Mongolia autonomous regions, as well as other cities and regions, participated in the wrestling championships, which include 10 categories for men and eight categories for women.

2 die in poisonous gas leak

A toxic gas leak killed two and sickened another six at a ferronickel mine in Northwest China's Qinghai province early on Saturday, the local safety authority said. A cyanogen sulfide leak was detected at around 1 am at the Yuanshishan ferronickel mine in Ping'an county in Haidong city, the Qinghai provincial safety administration said. It said rescue work began immediately after the accident, and the sickened miners were rushed to hospital. The cause of the leak is under investigation.

Red pandas arrive at zoo

Three red pandas from Fujian province arrived in Taipei on Friday and are expected to make their public debut in mid-July, according to the Taipei Zoo. The three animals, bred by a panda research center in Fujian, were given to the zoo to promote breeding cooperation. They are Huan Huan, 7-year-old, and females Mei Ke, 6, and Ya Ya, 4. The Taipei Zoo has had four red pandas from Japan and has been trying to breed them, but the attempts have failed, said Chen Yu-yan, a panda expert.

Subway mishap injures 6

Six passengers suffered slight injuries after a false alarm caused panic on a subway train in Guangzhou on Saturday, police said. Police received reports of a large crowd of panic-stricken passengers flooding out of a train at Meihuayuan Station on Line 3 at 12:52 pm. A preliminary investigation showed a passenger had fallen ill and fainted on the train. While a subway worker was reporting the situation to the train driver through his walkie-talkie, one passenger shouted, "he was slashed by someone with a knife", and another one yelled, "there's a bomb on the train". Police found nothing suspicious on the train.

Heavy rain forecast for several regions

China's National Meteorological Center on Saturday renewed a blue alert for heavy rain in some southern and northeastern regions. Parts of Yunnan, Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning and Jilin provinces, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang and Inner Mongolia autonomous regions will see rainstorms, with precipitation up to 80 millimeters from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, the NMC said. The NMC cautioned that students who take part in the National College Entrance Examination that takes place over the weekend should leave home early to make sure they get to the exam spots on time.
