Legendary general dies aged 102

General Vo Nguyen Giap, the architect of Vietnam's military victories over France and the United States, died on Friday, aged 102, family members said. The general was one of Vietnam's best-known 20th century figures, ranked by historians among such military giants as Montgomery, Rommel and MacArthur.

Syria has given international experts additional details about its chemical weapons program that go beyond a Sept 21 declaration of its poison gas arsenal, the UN said on Friday. The team consists of experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague, Netherlands, with help from UN personnel.

At least 4 killed in Cairo clashes

At least four people died in fierce clashes that erupted in Cairo on Friday when Islamist supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi protested against the military that ousted him. Fighting also broke out after weekly prayers in Alexandria and the province of Assiut in Upper Egypt as Islamists took to the streets, state media reported.

Sisters question woman's death

A woman who engaged police in a dramatic car chase through the streets of Washington, prompting a lockdown before officers shot her dead, suffered from post-partum depression, her sisters said on Friday, while questioning why she had to die. Miriam Carey, 34, had her 1-year-old baby in the car with her on Thursday when she tried to drive her black Infiniti coupe through a barrier near the White House, then sped away toward Capitol Hill, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended when her car got stuck on a median strip and police shot her.

City to replace heating plants

Beijing will replace four coal-burning heating plants with natural gas fired ones by the end of next year as it steps up efforts to clean up pollution, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday. The report, citing the city's Commission of Development and Reform, said the four plants and some 40 other related projects would cost around 48 billion yuan ($8 billion) and cut sulphur dioxide emissions by 10,000 metric tons.
