Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory will update weather forecasts every three hours during the Universiade for all Games venues.

From Aug. 1, weather reports can be obtained on 8211-7772, said Wang Yanqing, head of the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory. He was speaking on a call-in program on Shenzhen Radio on Wednesday, July 20.

The observatory recently opened a bilingual Web site http://dayun.szmb.gov.cn for expatriates to check the weather.

The observatory also opened http://t.qq.com/szmb121, and http://weibo.com/szmb for updated weather information.

"During the Universiade, Shenzhen is most likely to be affected by tropical storms and the chance of heavy rain is 59 percent. Some Universiade events such as golf, tennis, board surfing, sailing and archery will be affected," Wang said.

But Shenzhen would not intervene in the weather for the closing and opening ceremonies because there was little chance of success, he said.

About Shenzhen

Shenzhen is located at the southern tip of the Chinese mainland on the eastern bank of the mouth of the Pearl River and neighbors Hong Kong.

The brainchild of Deng Xiaoping, the country's first special economic zone was established here by the Chinese Government in 1980. It has been a touchstone for China's reform and opening-up policy since then.
