NEW YORK - Top seeded Serena Williams swept past unseeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the US Open here on Tuesday.
Williams enjoyed the 63-minute victory by hitting 12 aces, with only one double-fault. "I got off to a fast start, and I didn't want to start out slow. That's all I could do today," said Williams, who played just three singles matches since the Wimbledon because of a sore right shoulder.
"I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to see. I haven't been able to play much since Wimbledon, so every day I'll just see how it goes," Williams added.
