HANGZHOU - The only S2 woman swimmer in the eighth Chinese National Games for Disabled Feng Yazhu failed to surpass her second world record here on Sunday.
Breaking world record once and surpassing national record twice in the eighth Chinese National Games for Disabled, Feng Yazhu was always racing lonely as the only woman S2 swimmer in the pool.
S2 swimmers are mostly able to use their arms with no use of their hands, legs or trunk or have severe co-ordination problems in four limbs according to basic guide to International Paralympic Committee (IPC) swimming classification system.
Feng was born paralysed. No matter moving in the wheelchair, getting out of the water, or changing her swimming suit, she needed the assistance from the others. But when she was swimming in the pool, Feng was like a mermaid back home.
"She's not afraid of water when she was even a little kid," said Feng's coach Yu Bo. Start swimming when she was about 13, Feng Yazhu built up her body gradually through six years daily training.
The Games was Feng's first time to compete on the national level. After three-time enrolling and classifying, Feng was the only women swimmer who met the S2 rules. Therefor, her dream to win a medal in her debut show was broken as all the events she attended were downgraded to timetests.
"Feng can only race against herself now. But it doesn't matter because we came to surpass ourselves, not the others," said Yu Bo.
The only record Feng failed to reach was the 100-meter women's freestyle. After she saw Yu Bo, the smiling teenager instantly showed her bitter looking face.
"It's a pity that I didn't reach the record as usual," murmured Feng.
