The race was originally scheduled for May 14-15 in Yokohama, some 300 kilometers south of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear station crippled by the March 11 magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Beijing Olympic champion Jan Frodeno of Germany was among the first to withdraw from the event as the International Triathlon Union stuck to its original plan.

A series of international sport events scheduled to be held in Japan have been canceled, postponed or relocated due to the ongoing nuclear crisis since March.
