All foreign-oriented hotels and large shopping malls in Guangzhou accept intentionally popular credit cards such as American Express, Diners Card, JCB, VISA and MasterCard. The Bank of China is specifically engaged in dealing with the transactions of credit cards issued abroad. Most foreign currencies can be converted into RMB at hotel banks. The International Arrivals area of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport also has foreign currency exchange counters set up by Guangdong Development Bank providing foreign currency exchange services for American Dollars, Euros, Japanese Yen, and Hong Kong Dollars.

Travellers can convert their unused RMB back into foreign currency before departure using the foreign currency exchange form which is valid for 6 months. The exchange rates differ under different circumstances. For the converting of travel cheques, credit cards and remittances, the buying rate shall apply; while the selling rate shall apply when converting foreign currency into RMB, including the conversion of foreign cash. And when converting RMB into the foreign currency, the buying rate shall apply.

Foreigners may carry a maximum of RMB 20,000 per person in cash every time when leaving or entering China Customs territory.
