Bangladesh athletes ready to compete in Asian Games

DHAKA - Bangladesh will send 2 athletes to participate in the 16th Asian Games and 6 players to participate in the 16th Asian Games Archery Competition both to be held in Guangzhou, China this month.

Shah Alam, general secretary of Bangladesh Athletic Association, told Xinhua on Wednesday that one male athlete named Harul Islam will compete in the game of 100 meter sprint and one female athlete Beauty will compete in the games of 100 and 200 meter sprint.

Alam said Bangladesh is very backward in athletic. "We participate in the Asian Games to get some experience and improve our level," he said.

Kazi Rajibuddin Ahmed Chapol, general secretary of Bangladesh Archery Association, told Xinhua on Wednesday they will send 3 men and 3 women to compete in Asian Games Archery Competition.

Kazi said Bangladesh introduced archery in 2001 and fully started the game in 2005. "Though the time is very short, the game is developing and getting popular," he said.

Kazi said Bangladesh archery team has participated in quite a few international and regional competitions. "The best performance is 6th position in the Commonwealth Games held in India this year, "he said.

Kazi said there is almost no possibility for Bangladesh to win any medal in archery competition in the upcoming Asian Games. "But we will try our best to have good performance," he said.

Bangladesh will compete in 16 events in the 16th Asian Games. The South Asian country competed in 11 events in the 15th Asian Games in Doha in 2006 and only won one bronze medal from the event of Kabadi.
