China has no specific gold medal target at Asian Games

GUANGZHOU -- The general goal for China at the upcoming Guangzhou Asian Games is to showcase the professionalism and spirit of fair play of the Chinese athletes to the world, a top official with China's sport authorities said here Wednesday.

"We have decided that the general goal of the Chinese team at the games is to participate in a clean and civilized way, showing the spirit and integrity of the athletes to the world," said Yang Shu'an, deputy head of the General Administration of Sport and the Games' organizing committee's vice president.

There's no specific gold medal target at the games, he said.

To be held in China's southern city of Guangzhou, the Asian Games will open on November 12. During the 15-day Games, a total of 10,156 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions will compete in 476 events in 42 sports categories. The Asian Para Games will start on December 12.

Nearly 1,500 Chinese athletes will compete in the Asian Games.
