Yu, who rushed to a seventh finish at the world junior athletics championships last year in Beijing, beat top qulifier Zhang Chong in 50.80 seconds.

"I'm quite satisfied with the result, although it's 0.50 second behind my personal best," said the 19-year-old Yu.

"After all, it's too cold," Yu added. "So I think the time was good enough."

Zhang, representing Pudong District of Shanghai, was the top qualifier in the heats in 51.94 seconds, but could not keep up with a flying Yu, following behind in 51.42 seconds.

The 19-year-old Chen Dayu from Shenzhen finished third in 51.73 seconds.

Yu began his training in 110m hurdles since grade four at elementary school. Then the young talent was selected to the provincial team of Guangdong, focusing on 400m hurdles thereafter.

Being a world junior championships rookie, Yu valiantly dashed to the final and snatched a seventh placing in 51.17 seconds last year in Beijing.
