Thousands of runners join half marathon in Manhattan(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-08-06 08:24 Some 10,000 runners hit the streets Sunday for the annual New York City half marathon -- one of the big events leading up to the full marathon in November.
Haile Gebrselassie of Ethopia won the 10,000-dollar top prize by finishing the race in 59 minutes and 24 seconds, the second best record for a half marathon in the United States.
In the women's race, Hilda Kibet of Kenya beat defending champion Catherine Nderba of Kenya to win. Kibet completed the race in one hour, 10 minutes and 32 seconds.
The race kicked off in Central Park and finished in Battery Park with a festival.
Along the route, participants could enjoy the view of the Hudson River, the World Financial Center and other landmark buildings in Manhattan.
A half marathon is a road running event of 21.08 kms. It is half the distance of a marathon and usually run on roads.
Half marathon is popular among amateurs, long enough to be a serious challenge but not requiring the level of training of a full marathon.
