MOSCOW - Finland has been awarded the 2012 world championship, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced on Saturday.

It will be the seventh time Finland has staged the event, the last occasion being in 2003.

Finland beat out Nordic rivals Sweden for the honour after Hungary withdrew its bid from the voting which was held during the IIHF General Congress.

The IIHF will mark its 100th anniversary by bringing the 2008 world championships to the sport's birthplace and spiritual home, staging the event in Canada for the first time.

The 2009 championship will be hosted by Switzerland. Germany will stage the 2010 tournament and Slovakia the one in 2011.
