Spain's win over England lights way forward, says Torres(Reuters)Updated: 2007-03-22 08:58 MADRID, March 21 - Striker Fernando Torres has called for a repeat performance of Spain's recent win over England for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Denmark in the Bernabeu. Spain were confident 1-0 winners last month when they played England in a friendly at Old Trafford. "Beating England was a big lift for us. After a string of bad results we showed that we can compete with the best and that we have quality in this team. Now we need to reaffirm it," Torres was quoted as saying in the Spanish media on Wednesday. Spain have made a poor start in their qualifying campaign and lie fifth in Group F, nine points behind leaders Sweden after winning one and losing two of their opening three matches. "It's unfortunate that we are in this situation but our destiny is still in our own hands. Winning every game from now on will put us in the finals," Torres added. Spain have a good record against Denmark, who are second in the group with seven points, having won nine and lost two in 14 previous meetings. After playing Denmark on Saturday, Spain host Iceland in Mallorca next Wednesday. |
