Addressing the closing ceremony, Cai Fuchao, member of the standing committee and director of the publicity department of CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, attributed the success of the 23-day event to full cooperation among the organizers, excellent performance of personalities and teams of the literary and art, academic and sports circles, support of the Olympic co-hosts involved and People's Liberation Army, as well as mass participation.

One the highlight at the ceremony was the debut of sixteen winning songs of the Third Campaign to Solicit Songs for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. A total of 8,000 pieces of lyrics and 700 pieces of music were submitted to the campaign, which commenced on January 1 and ended on June 1, 2006, with half contributed by the professionals.

This year's cultural festival, themed "Experience the Civilization & Enjoy the Olympic Games", was the fourth of its kind in succession since 2003.

The festival featured 28 Olympic-themed cultural activities, such as the Beijing International Sports Film Week and a series of "Olympic Beats" Open-air Concerts, from June 23 to July 15 in Beijing and co-host cities, including Qingdao, Tianjin and Shanghai.
