The BMW Sauber Formula One team are to replace engine designer Heinz Paschen with Markus Duesmann, who previously worked for rivals Mercedes.

BMW said in a statement on Monday that Paschen, who has overseen all of the German carmaker's engines for the past six years, would leave by mutual agreement on January 1 next year.

They said the decision came after 37-year-old German Duesmann, previously head of development F1 engines at Mercedes High Performance Engines in Brixworth, central England, approached them looking for a new challenge.

Mercedes own 40 percent of McLaren.
