From masterpieces by Renoir and Van Gogh, to prints and small pieces of sculptures and paintings, the ongoing Shanghai Art Fair has something for every art lover.
The fair going from Nov 13 to 16 at Shanghai Expo is in the 18th edition this year.
A large group of sculptures sit in front of the Shanghai Expo, announcing art’s occupation of the compound. The round-shape human figures in leisurely postures are from American sculptor Joy Brown, and the anime-style slim figures are from young Chinese artist Yan Shilin.
Hundreds of galleries from all over the world exhibit their art work. The largest number of foreign institutions has come from South Korea and Russia this year.
The most expensive piece is a landscape painting by Impressionism master Renoir, with an estimated value of 4.5 million yuan.
The gallery also planned to present a painting by Van Gogh at the fair, but the piece hasn’t arrived in time. It would have been the most expensive painting at the fair this year, with a price of about 10 million yuan.
The fair also features a fine selection of limited-edition prints and other affordable artwork, which, Gu Zhihua, deputy director of the organizing committee, says, is to encourage more art lovers to buy art. “One can buy a nice piece of artwork for his elaborately-furbished sitting room without taking great financial pressure. It is a very good start for new collectors.”
