Yang Shuping, head of the Sanmenxia Party committee, together with Lv Tinglin, the city’s publicity chief, gave a television interview regarding the city’s spirit and the practice of “core socialist values” on Oct 9.
Residents in Sanmenxia, Central China’s Henan province, donated more than 90,000 ml of blood between Sept 10 and 14 to save a person’s life. The story of the city’s swift blood donation impressed many people.
After a brief review of the blood donation event, Yang told the audience that the patient who needed 30,000 ml of blood on Sept 10 is now out of danger and recovering at No 3 People's Hospital of Sanmenxia.
When asked how the city mobilized its people to donate blood so swiftly, Yang explained:
“Most people in Sanmenxia have a caring heart for those who are in need. New media plays an important role in spreading the message and gathering people who want to lend a helping hand.”
The story was only one of countless good deeds performed by people in Sanmenxia, Central China’s Henan province.
Li Hongkun, a student in Sanmenxia, carried his disabled deskmate Liu Tongyu to school for seven years. Both boys have been accepted to universities and will attend after graduation in July.
On Aug 15, a young man in Lushi county held an umbrella for an old lady who fainted on the road under the scorching sun until she was transferred to an ambulance.
As to the question whether residents would be afraid of the possibility that the old people they’ve helped may sue them for medical expenses, as such cases have been reported many times nationwide, Lv said:
“Social trends can exert great influence on people’s behavior. Today Sanmenxia has developed nearly 499 registered volunteer associations. With more than 40,000 volunteers across the city, people have cultivated an atmosphere to stop when they see anyone in need.”
The publicity chief further added that the media has also continued to report exemplary deeds, and the local government encourages outstanding deeds with honorary medals.
The officials also explained that good deeds can also be attributed to socialist values the authorities consider important, such as democracy, civility, harmony, freedom, equality, justice, the law, patriotism, dedication, integrity and friendship.
