Former French Club

The Former French Club is situated at 29 North Jiefang Road, Heping District. It is now the heritage site under city/county protection and the important protection historic architecture in Tianjin and is used as an office building.

The club was founded in the 1890s and became the place where the French people gathered to entertain and discuss over important issues. In 1932, the Industry Bureau in French Concession started constructing the building which occupies an area of some 7000 square meters and has a floor area of about 2900 square meters.

The main entrance of this one-storied house is at the corner and it has a basement. With vertical lines and polygon lamp columns on both sides of the entrance, it looks very special. The building has an angle central hall, a dance hall, a bar and a multifunctional hall where people could practice fencing, boxing and other performances.

The plain design, good-sized doors and windows and delicate wrought iron all demonstrate the characteristics of the art movement at the end of the ninetieth century and the emergence of modern architectures.
