Former Jaialai Sportcenter

The Former Jaialai Sportcenter, situated at 47 Minzu Road, Hebei District, is now an important protection historic architecture in Tianjin and is used for business. It was a gambling house started by V. Fumagalli and was the largest indoor sport center with sports ground, dining hall and lounge in North China.

In 1942, M.LEOPOLD, a Swiss took over the center and renamed it as Hailai Sportcenter. After the victory in 1945, it was closed down. The center was designed by an Italian architect Bonetti and a Swiss called Kessler and was built in 1934, covering an area of some 4000 square meters and having a floor area of about 6400 square meters.

After the new China was founded, it was redesigned by Guan Songjian and Kessler and rebuilt into the Workers' Club. This steel-concrete structure building is very modern because the vertical format on the facade. In the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake, the tower on the roof was damaged and was restored in 2008.
