Tianjin port is comprised of four port areas: North Port, South Port, East Port and Haihe River Port. East Port is under construction and is located northeast of Tianjin Port. It is an artificial land encircled by sea from three sides and has a total area of about 30 square kilometers.
East Port is the largest and most open port of the current 13 bonded ports in China. East Port Free Trade Zone has a coastline that is nearly seven kilometers long and covers about ten square kilometers.
Tianjin Port is a core carrier for the Tianjin Binhai New Area to build an international shipping and international logistic center in North China. East Port is a key place for Tianjin port to develop its port and marine economy.
The idea for the construction of East Port was put forth in the 1980s. It was included into the master plan for Tianjin Port and was approved by the Ministry of Transport and the Tianjin Municipal Government in 1987. In order to make an international advanced East Port, Tianjin Port carried out international solicitation for the conceptual plan of the East Port in June of 2004. The master plan of the East Port was completed and submitted to the municipal government in May of 2005. In January 2007, the Master Plan for the East Port of Tianjin Port was officially approved by the Tianjin Municipal People’s Government.
In the master plan, the East Port is divided into three zones: a terminal area, a logistic processing zone and a comprehensive port service zone with five functions including handling containers, container logistics, business and trade, living and residence, and leisure and tourism.
The terminal area will be in the west part of the East Port and stretch 1,000m. After construction of the terminal is complete, Tianjin Port will have another seven kilometer long container terminal. In the next 10 to 15 years, the port will be able to handle the world’s most advanced container ships.
The logistic processing zone will be in the middle of the Dongjiang port and will be engaged in modern processing, distribution, purchase, reloading and the allocation of imported and exported goods. It will provide convenient and efficient full-course logistic services for domestic and foreign logistic companies. Meanwhile, in order to further link port hinterland and connect the inland of Asia, a large modern sea-railway reloading center has been planned in the northwest of East Port. This will provide a fast and convenient channel for the container sea-railway transport operation.
The comprehensive port service zone will be in the east of the port area. It will have four functional zones: the residential zone, the business and commercial zone, the leisure holiday zone and the cruise terminal zone. It will also have supply services such as offices, living spaces, and leisure for the staff and business people in East Port.
