IBM celebrated on Thursday the opening of its remanufacturing center in Shenzhen, a place that will recycle old servers, reproduce and put them onto the market again.

According to Richard Dicks, general manager of IBM Global Financing (IGF) department, who leads operation and sales of IBM's secondhand equipments, the newly opened Shenzhen factory is the company's first remanufacturing center in China while the 22nd one in the world. It is also the first factory in China that has a license for IT remanufacture.

He said as recycling economy becomes a trend the company sees vast potential in secondhand devices, which are much cheaper and also have good performance after well reproduced. "According to a survey the secondhand ones take five to 15 percent of the whole market, and we want that market," he said.

Dicks expects the Shenzhen center delivers several hundred remanufactured servers this year and that this number will reach 10,000 by 2015.

Zheng Xiaofei, IGF general manger of greater China, said the reproducing includes the cleansing of data, which is one of the main concerns of their customers. He said they will let the customer do the cleansing first, and then IBM will cleansing the data three times to make sure they are completely deleted.

He said more than 90 percent of the parts and materials of the old servers will be used, leaving only about 7 percent to crushing up, so as to leave the least garbage to the environment.

According to him server produced in this factory will be sold in one third to half the price of a new server, differing according to the demands of the customers. They are produced in accordance with IBM certification and they enjoy the guarantee of IBM.
