'Hometown of strawberry' red in China

HEFEI —An evening party kicked off the 11th Changfeng Strawberry Cultural Festival on Dec 30 here, displaying the county's progress in planting strawberry, one of characteristic fruits in east China's Anhui province.
People within the province swarmed to Hefei Olympic Center to enjoy the feast which showed the glamour and attractiveness of strawberry in Changfeng, a county administered by the provincial capital of Hefei.
"Strawberry is my favorite fruit," said Chen Feichang,a little girl who came for the festival from Huainan, a neighboring city.
Tang Chuanxin, administrator of Changfeng County which is renowned for its advantage of growing strawberry in the country, confirmed that strawberry industry in Changfeng is "a beautiful card" in Anhui.
Changfeng is called "the hometown of strawberry in China" and became the No 1 county of growing this fruit in China. It started strawberry-planting in 1983 and the industry has now become the county’s leading industry.
The evening party was co-organized by Changfeng County Committee of the Communist Party of China and Changfeng County Government. Many high-level officials from provincial level and the local government attended it.
"The strawberry planting area in our county has reached 165,000 acres and expected to create 2.5 billion yuan ($400 million) in economic value," according to Xu Shengbing, chief of the Publicity Department of Changfeng County Committee of the Communist Party of China.
