Seventy-one roads inside Beijing's Fifth Ring Road will be temporarily closed on the Lunar New Year's Eve because of firecrackers, the Beijing Evening News reported Thursday.
The 71 roads, mostly around densely inhabited communities or prescribed firework display sites, will be closed to traffic from 11:45 pm to 00:15 am on the night of February 13.
Fireworks were invented in China in the 12th century. They are set off as a way to scare away evil with their loud sound and also to pray for happiness and prosperity.
