A trusting woman had to use 20,000 yuan ($2,900) of her own money to replace airline tickets after she was conned by her longtime travel agent.

The woman purchased 17 tickets for her office colleagues that turned out to be invalid.

Cai, a native of Guangdong province, was working in Beijing two years ago when she met the man surnamed Lai, through the Internet.

She has purchased tickets from him several times but never had a problem.

Days ago, she spent 20,000 yuan to purchase tickets for her colleagues trying to get home for the Spring Festival.

The man disappeared and his mobile phone has been turned off.
