Preserving the secret language of women

Middle school students learn women's writing, or nu shu, at Jiangyong Women's Writing Museum, Central China's Hunan province, May 6. The museum began teaching women's writing to local students and women in 2001 to preserve the knowledge and tradition of women's writing. In ancient China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu ("women’s writing").[Photo/Xinhua]
