 Images of devastating oil spill

A screen grab from China’s Central Television (CCTV) on July 6, 2011, shows the devastation caused by the oil spill at the Penglai 19-3 oil field in Bohai Bay off China's eastern coast. The leak, which has polluted an area of 840 square kilometers, was brought under control by June 19, but caused "a certain level" of damage to the nearby oceanic environment, according to China's State Oceanic Administration. The field is being mined by ConocoPhillips China (COPC), a subsidiary company under ConocoPhillips, under a joint development agreement with the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, the country's largest offshore oil producer. The spill has sparked a gulf of criticism online over the transparency and social responsibilities of large energy companies after China National Offshore Oil Corporation previously admitted that only an area of 200 square meters was polluted.
