Judo wrap ups with host on top

Four of the five gold medal matches were decided by an ippon score or shoulder throw on the last day of judo competition yesterday, as the host nation's women wrapped up a solid performance with a total of four gold medals.

China's Yuan Yanping defeated Deanne Silva from Brazil to win the women's +70kg category title, China's fourth title in Paralympics judo in Beijing.

The bronze medals were won by Russia's Irina Kalyanova and Algeria's Bouazoug.

In the women's 70kg division, Spain's Maria del Carmen Herrera took gold after defeating Mexican Lenia Ruvalcaba.

Russia's Oleg Kretsul beat Tofig Mammadov from Azerbaijan to win the men's 90kg.

Brazil's Antonio Tenorio Silva defeated Azerbaijan's Karim Sardarov in the men's -100kg category.

Azerbaijan's Ilham Zakiyev beat China's Wang Song to win the the final gold medal in the men's +100kg.

Controversially, three judokas were asked to withdraw from competition before their bouts because they did not meet the medical limitations set for the Games.

Cuba's Anayasi Hernandez, Algeria's Khalil Guerfa and 2007 world champion Ahmed Kebaili were deemed to have better visual ability than other judokas in their categories.
