Are single-sex schools better than co-ed schools?

Since boys' success at school is steadily declining, and fewer boys than girls are surviving the educational system, it would be good to see a school buck that trend. It would be even better if the boys' class had a male teacher, male teachers being uncommon in elementary schools, where female teachers predominate.
