职称英语考试 (zhíchēng yīngyǔ kǎoshì): English test for professional title

The test of English proficiency is one of the most popular tests for acquiring a professional title. Under the current administrative title system, individuals who fail to pass the English test cannot get a professional title and enjoy the corresponding benefits.

However, there are many who argue that the English test is not necessary for all kinds of jobs, and passing the test should not be always necessary to attain a title. Moreover, although Chinese people pay great attention to studying English, many fail to master the language because of the emphasis placed on exam-oriented education.

The English exam in National College Entrance Examination has been reformed several times, and more and more people are appealing for reform of the English test used to get a professional title. Some even argue it should be abolished altogether.

But such professional title tests have become a complicated chain of interests that involve many sectors. Considering the roughly 1 million examinees for the English test, it is easy to understand why reform of this test is difficult. The country should make efforts to reform the professional title tests in order to promote the development of talents.
