Inspirational math teaching matters more than IMO

The six-member team representing the United States took first place at this year's International Mathematical Olympiad, which was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from July 4 to 13. It was their first win since 1994. Chinese students usually win the competion. Comments:

For long, Chinese students at high schools and primary schools have been burdened with repeated and monotonous math practice, without the guidance of inspirational and joyful teaching. That, to some extent, has had a negative impact on students' imaginations after they grow up. It is not the IMO gold medals that really matter, but further improvement in China's math teaching methods on the basis of its advantages.

As a rising major power, China has to adopt a magnanimous stance if it loses its top spot in global events such as the IMOs and table tennis tournaments. It would not be good for China's image if it "monopolizes" an international sports event for decades.

The real value of the Mathematical Olympiad lies in its potential to boost students' interest in math and competitive performance. It is not only about winning awards or the winners being admitted into top universities. The awards won each year by a few Chinese students do not necessarily reflect the majority of Chinese high school students' math abilities. Students should have a say in what they want to study at school, and schools should make more efforts to allow their students more choices in the ongoing reform of college admission system.
