Being a vendor no shame for degree holders

(China Daily) Updated: 2015-05-14 08:15

Unlike most of her classmates who attempted to get an office job from a company upon graduation, a young graduate, after obtaining a master's degree from Chongqing Technology and Business University in Chongqing municipality, chose to be a street snack vendor. She admits sometimes "envying" her classmates who have a promising career ahead, despite enjoying a booming business and popularity as a vendor. Comments:

The country's increasing favorable policies that encourage university students to be entrepreneurs indicate the grim employment situation. However, they also offer more diversified ways for graduates to start their careers, what the Chongqing postgraduate has done being a case in point. In fact, she should not feel let down by her less esteemed yet successful job, which is flourishing as a result of her hard work and efficient promotion.

Being an independent entrepreneur is a good choice for job-seeking graduates, who now enjoy favorable policies and so are more likely to succeed. When it comes to career choices, there is no fundamental difference that separates the more educated and the less educated applicants. One should heed a lesson from the Chongqing student's choice that graduates should not make their education background a major factor in their job hunt.

There should be more than one way to define one's success today, when market forces are playing a bigger role in China's economic development, and people can change professions. If the woman selling snacks on the street gets success, she will gain respect from making the business flourish with her own efforts.
