In the US, and especially in NYC, the culture is to hail cabs on the street, so you typically have a good idea of how lucky you are going to be just by looking outside. But taxi-calling apps work great in Manhattan. It's not as easy to get a taxi in some of the other boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, etc)
