Comment on "Textile industry at the crossroads of change" (China Daily, Dec 15)
Given the rapid development of e-commerce, China should explore the potential for customized fast fashion to enable small enterprises to bloom across the country and the world at large.
I envision the coming age of customized individual clothing; for example, people seeking to put their names on the pockets of jeans, or cut random holes on them. Such demands require individual attention, which can be done only by a small group of skilled and innovative workers.
Although jeans as we have known them for decades would still be made in big factories at lower costs, the added-value work would be done by small companies or just individuals.
People will place their customized orders through e-commerce platforms and the platforms' operators will guarantee quality and timely payment, making it a win-win-win situation. I believe this will be the trend in the near future and disagree with the idea of shifting China's factories overseas. The factories still have a lot to do at home.
