I was in Europe when the horsemeat scandal broke there, and people all over the E.U. were in two minds about it: They said yes, the suppliers and supermarkets were cheating us out of beef, and no, this does not affect our health. Of course, the health of consumers is rarely compromised when such underhanded manipulations occur. However, the steady erosion of the buying public's trust in the quality of food can go terribly wrong. If we no longer care what is inside a food wrapper we may one day end up being sold qualitatively inferior goods that may harm our health.
Consumer beware! Stay informed! Educate yourself! Don't trust food suppliers!
Mongolian eatery Khublai Khans, in Glasgow, has been serving hungry customers horse burgers and chips - or a barbecued horse fillet - as a guest meat a few weeks before the scandal broke, and it was pretty popular. |
