Comment on "Abbott is clearly shortsighted" (China Daily, July 1)
Many Australians lost their lives fighting against the Japanese army to resist their attempts to invade Australia during World War II, which included over 200 air raids on Darwin.
Many Australians still hate the Japanese for the way they treated Australian prisoners in prison camps across the Pacific islands. Therefore, the attitude of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop toward Japanese war history and other international issues is seen by many Australians as bizarre, if not shameful.
China should understand that the Australian people don't agree with Abbott, and the relationship between the Chinese and the Australian people is paramount. Despite Abbott's sycophant attitude toward Japan (and the United States), future cooperation between China and Australia is destined to strengthen.
