During my childhood, I had a comminuted fracture - concerning a bone broken into several pieces - which did not heal for a long time and left me terrified of the possibility of life-long disability. I was so lucky, as my mom was amazingly strong-willed and believed that I would be able to walk again and have a life like all the other boys, and she persevered with my treatment - carrying me with my heavy cast to almost all the hospitals in Wuhan to find the best possible care. During that time, the only one I could count on at all times was my mom. Fortunately, I made a good recovery after treatment by a renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Shanghai, about one and half years after the injury to my right foot. Years have passed, but the picture of tears welling in my mom's eyes after hearing the diagnosis – and thinking I may never get better - is never far from my mind.
I am forever indebted to my mom – and she made me believe that love can lead to miracles!
