What's the buzz

(China Daily) Updated: 2012-05-21 08:07

"If life were a fast-moving train, regret and contentment would be the tracks." In the midst of graduation season, what regrets do you have about your days on campus. China Daily cell phone readers share their stories with us:

Regrets are just like the "white and red rose" described in Eileen Chang's novel. As soon as I entered university, seniors told me that there are several things I needed to do before graduating, such as failing tests, skipping classes and getting drunk. So I did all those things. But in doing so, I lost my scholarship and failed to become a post graduate. Finally, I understand that "no regrets" does not mean experiencing everything, it is choosing what is worth doing.

It is now the end of my third year in university, and I feel that time has just rushed by. I have worked hard. However, I still feel time is limited. So I regret that I didn't work hard enough in my earlier courses. However, the thing I regret the most is that I did not fall in love. Day by day as we become more realistic romance and marriage become two different things, it seems that I don't have the time for romance now.

The thing I most regret is that I didn't attend any competition. Although a comfortable and easy life is the pursuit of every one, competing makes it more worthwhile, just like the calm after the rainstorm is more splendid.

I used to tell myself never regret anything, since everything is my own choice. So I never allowed myself any regrets. But finally, I found out that the thing I most regret is that I gave up the chance to make myself more outstanding. Life is just like a circle connected by various dots. When you give up some dots, the circle is not perfect as expected. However, sometimes, I figured that maybe being imperfect is also beautiful, just like the Aphrodite of Milo, regrets sometimes can become a special beauty for your life.

People who have graduated for one or two years may have more regrets than students just starting university. When I was in university, I tried to cheat in tests, I failed in classes I fell in love and was deeply hurt. But they are also beautiful parts of my time at university. My only regret is that I spent too little time studying, which I realize now should be the most fundamental thing to do at university.

Daxiong, Wuhan, Hubei province

My biggest regret about my university days is that I didn't make good plans for my life, especially a good career plan. Through communicating with students that graduated from universities overseas, I have learned that Chinese universities don't pay attention to students' career paths. They neither evaluate students' characters to help them learn about themselves nor release regular employment trends to help students choose a career. As a result, it leads to many students feeling lost after they graduate. I became a civil servant after my graduation, but now, I find out that a government job does not suit my character and I regret my choice.

Looking back on my four years at university, most of the time I was in the dorm, classroom and library, and I seldom left the campus. Therefore, my biggest regret is that I didn't go traveling during these years. We can learn by reading a thousand books and by traveling a thousand miles. Traveling can expand our minds and increase our knowledge, which is very necessary for undergraduates.
