The Syria crisis is touching nerves of all international communities. Currently, there are not only diplomatic mediations strengthening the hope of peace, but also dangerous signals showing Syria is going to have a general civil war. The trend of the situation of Syria will decide the future of the Syrian people and is also a serious challenge for the international relation system.
The work group sent by the special envoy for the Syria issue Annan from the United Nations and the League of Arab States (Arab League), has arrived in Syria and started discussing with various parties of Syria on implementing the suggestion given by Annan for solving the crisis and on setting international observers in Syria. Meanwhile, a series of violent conflicts also occurred in Damascus successively. The fierce conflict between the governmental force and opposition force occurring on March 19 at the embassy zone was the severest conflict of the year in Damascus.
The United Nations and Arab League have both expressed that they support Annan's peace efforts and the Syrian government also said it will cooperate. However, some countries are still politically and militarily supporting the opposition force of Syria publicly or secretly and insist on a “regime change” in Syria. It obviously gives no constructive signal and objectively increases the possibility that the armed conflict of Syria will escalate.
Annan's peace mission is a very valuable opportunity. Countries around the world, especially some major countries, must shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding the peace, make efforts to urge various parties of Syria to stop the armed conflict and create conditions for peaceful negotiations. Only in this way can they create conditions for Annan's peace mediation. Will the issue be solved by violent measures or political and peaceful measures? The answer decides whether the armed conflict in Syria will evolve into a long-term bloody turbulence. It also associates with the stability of relations among great powers and the transition of the international order.
