Comment on "West should embrace competition" (China Daily website, Jan 11)
China should also embrace that some of us "overfed foreigners" are also kind-hearted, enlightened and truly interested in one of the oldest cultures on earth. Just because we live in the USA doesn't mean we're interested in hegemony more than anyone else.
We listen to philosophy and the dreams of all people. We yearn for peace and goodness. As Jefferson would say, "life, liberty, and (most important and I'm sure in agreement with Chinese principles) the pursuit of happiness." I hope the future will be bright for both of our countries and both of our peoples. We Americans who are enlightened are somewhat more worried about our own children than being a superpower somewhere else in the world.
China is a great nation. And it should do its part to end hunger, sadness, pain and loss. Continue its rich tradition of encouraging exploration, science, brotherhood among peaceful peoples, intellectual development and the belief that other peoples, of a good-natured spirit, are capable of being part of the "family of man."
The USA and China can together bring great things to a planet which groans under the weight of its own needs. It's a planet that won't last much longer as we know it, if we don't. God bless China, God bless the USA, and may God bless a family of nations who truly care about their people and all others on this very small place we call earth.
