Having had the pleasure of a brief stay in Shanghai, I had to read the news of the son of a local police chief Li Gang running over two girls and fleeing the scene of the accident. Trying to evade the consequences of his despicable act, he then tried to seek shelter under the "umbrella" of his father's position.

In my country (Germany) such a culprit would be jailed for about 10 years. Claiming that he was drinking alcohol before driving would not be accepted as an excuse, because everyone knows the consequences of drunk driving. Plus, his parents would be made to pay huge compensation to relatives of the girl who died and to the injured girl.

We expect children of civil servants to behave better than others to set an example. This is not a burden, but a privilege that brings real pride to life and motivates the public.
