National Art Museum of China is hosting an exhibition by Cai Guoqiang, whose pyrotechnics are internationally famous, as are his installation events.
The exhibition, Cai Guoqiang: I Want to Believe, has many provocative installations, including Venice's Rent Collectors' Courtyard, for which Cai won the grand prize at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999.
The Beijing presentation of the retrospective tour is designated by the Ministry of Culture as "a key cultural event for the Beijing Olympics" and will be on view at the museum until Sep 2.
The Beijing venue also showcases many of Cai's iconic works included in the Guggenheim Museum's presentation, with new configurations of Inopportune: Stage One and An Arbitrary History: River.
It will also stage a new gunpowder drawing by the artist relating to his involvement as a core member of the creative team and director of visual and special effects for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
