Phelps's seventh gold medal made him match Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics.

Spitz, also an American swimmer, won his seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics but Phelps will get the chance to better that haul in Sunday's medley relay.
