Traffic control takes effect in Beijing
Updated: 2008-07-20 20:38
Cars with even number plates travel on a road in Beijing, July 20, 2008. Traffic restrictions came into affect in Beijing on Sunday in an attempt to improve the capital's air quality and traffic situation for next month's Olympics. Cars will be banned on alternate days depending on whether their license plates end in odd or even numbers. Beijing hopes to take the city's 2.2 million cars off the roads and reduce emissions by 63 percent for a two-month period. [Agencies]
