"The 100-year Olympic dream of China will be realized Let's raise our spirits high and work solidly to fulfill the task of holding a successful Games," Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said at a meeting in the Great Hall of the People in the heart of the capital.
"We should stay focused and pool our patriotic fervor to form a mighty force that can overcome all difficulties to hold a successful Olympics," Jia said.
More than 6,000 people including athletes, students, volunteers, Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee (BOCOG) staff and representatives of sponsors, hospitals and the service industry attended Wednesday's meeting to work for a successful Games.
Since July 2001, when Beijing won the right to host the 2008 Olympics, the city has been steadily gearing up for the international sporting event.
As promised by BOCOG president Liu Qi, with the Games approaching, the Beijing organizers will focus their attention on tasks that include:
Organizing successful opening and closing ceremonies
Further improving Games-related operations
Providing good services for the media
Creating a warm atmosphere to welcome the Games
Emphasizing environmental protection and realizing a "peaceful Olympics" with an effective security plan.
Yesterday's pledge by the Olympic organizers was accompanied by a series of celebratory activities at home and abroad.
More than 10,000 people in Beijing took part in a 33-km fun run to mark the countdown, while an Olympic gala performance was held at the Taimiao, or Imperial Ancestral Temple, in the evening.
