Scheduled to open in 2010, Dongtan will eventually house a population of 500,000 and will only allow vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen.

Arup is again behind the project and plans to build three more such cities.

Brown and Wen said after talks on Friday they hope to drive up bilateral trade by 50 percent over the next several years to US$60 billion (euro41 billion) from the estimated US$40 billion (euro27 billion) that was reached last year.

Brown, who is traveling to China and India with a large delegation of high-profile business leaders, also welcomed investment into Britain from China's US$200 billion (euro136 billion) sovereign wealth fund.
