Beijing's traffic bureau will impose special controls in heavily-touristed parts of the city to prevent traffic jams during the upcoming week-long May Day holiday.

The Star Daily on Wednesday reported that motor vehicles will be banned from the streets around Tian'anmen Square and the Imperial Palace from May 1 to May 7.

Temporary traffic controls will also apply to other popular tourist destinations, like the Summer Palace and the Fragrant Hills, or Xiangshan. The bureau says the controls will be decided in accordance with actual traffic conditions during the holiday.

Further measures will be imposed to control the traffic on the expressway to the Badaling section of the Great Wall and surrounding streets.
